![]() It takes at least a little bit of humility to say thank you to another person. Implicit is an appreciation that I am not the center of the universe and I am dependent on others for my needs and wants. Humility – being the wordsmith that I am – comes from the Latin word “humus,” meaning soil. Being humble means to be grounded in the self-knowledge of what I am able to do and what I am not. As I am aware of what I am not able to do, I can ask for help and express gratitude when that other person helps me. In 12 Step Language, it is seeking the help of a higher power that can take us beyond powerlessness. Who has helped you move from helplessness in some area of your life and have you thanked them yet?

First, I appreciate your inclusion of humility's etymology. It gave the writer and word nerd in me a new appreciation for the word.

I totally agree with this article. You must know how to ask someone for help because we don't know everything. That's why there are teachers and parents to guide us all the way until we know how to make our own decisions. It is important that we thank them for all the efforts that they did for us to become the person that we want to be in the future. Showing gratefulness is a sign that you're humble. You also recognized that you cannot achieve the things that you want if you don't have the people who are helping you. My friend said that it is better to say thank you and don't mean it, than not to say it at all.
